He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive try to upend the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your coat you should give them your pullover too.
The apparent and direct truth that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a kind of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
So I have been inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We shall require to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.
