Old Deep-Sea Nets from French Coast Transform into Vital Shield Against Enemy Drones in the War Zone
On the harbor docks of the Breton shoreline, accumulations of old nets stand as a familiar view.
The usable duration of marine harvesting nets typically ranges between 12 and 24 months, after which they become worn and beyond repair.
Now, this horsehair netting, once used to trawl monkfish from the marine bottom, is serving alternative functions for an unexpected target: hostile aerial vehicles.
Charitable Effort Converts Fishing Byproducts
A coastal assistance group has dispatched two consignments of nets extending 174 miles to the war-torn nation to defend soldiers and civilians along the frontline where hostilities peak.
Russia employs small, cheap drones fitted with detonation devices, guiding them by distance operation for distances of up to 15.5 miles.
"During the past 24 months, the war has mutated. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a unmanned vehicle battle," stated a charity logistics coordinator.
Tactical Implementation of Fishing Nets
Ukrainian forces use the nets to create passageways where drone propellers become entangled. This approach has been compared to arachnids capturing insects in a net.
"Our contacts have informed us they don't need any old nets. They have been sent numerous that are ineffective," the coordinator explained.
"The nets we are sending are made of equine fiber and used for ocean trawling to catch strong marine species which are exceptionally strong and strike the mesh with a force comparable to that of a drone."
Growing Applications
Originally utilized by doctors protecting medical camps near the battle area, the nets are now implemented on roads, overpasses, the entrances to hospitals.
"It's remarkable that something so simple works so well," commented the humanitarian director.
"We don't have deficit of trawling material in this region. It creates difficulty to know where to send them as multiple companies that repurpose the gear have closed."
Logistical Challenges
The aid association was formed after community members contacted the organizers requesting support for clothing, food and medical supplies for Ukraine.
A team of helpers have delivered two vehicle loads of relief supplies 1,430 miles to the border crossing point.
"After being informed that Ukraine required mesh material, the fishing community responded immediately," declared the organization leader.
Drone Warfare Development
Russian forces employ FPV unmanned aircraft comparable to those on the retail industry that can be controlled by remote radio control and are then armed with detonation devices.
Enemy operators with instant visual data direct them to their targets. In certain regions, military personnel report that no movement occurs without attracting the attention of groups of "lethal" kamikaze drones.
Protective Strategies
The trawling material are stretched between poles to create mesh corridors or used to protect trenches and transport.
Friendly aerial vehicles are also equipped with sections of mesh to drop on enemy drones.
During summer months, Ukraine was dealing with more than numerous aerial vehicles per day.
International Support
Hundreds of tonnes of used fishing gear have also been contributed by marine workers in Scandinavian nations.
A former fisheries committee president commented that regional fishermen are extremely pleased to support the defense cause.
"They are proud to know their used material is going to assist in protection," he told reporters.
Funding Limitations
The organization no longer has the financial resources to send more supplies this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to provide transport to pick up the nets.
"We plan to support acquire the material and package them but we lack the financial capacity to continue managing shipments ourselves," stated the charity spokesperson.
Real-World Restrictions
An armed services communicator reported that protective mesh corridors were being implemented across the conflict area, about three-quarters of which is now described as occupied and controlled by enemy troops.
She commented that opposition vehicle controllers were progressively discovering ways to circumvent the protection.
"Mesh does not represent a complete solution. They are just a single component of protection against drones," she emphasized.
A retired market garden trader shared that the Ukrainians he had met were touched by the support of Brittany's coastal communities.
"The reality that those in the coastal economy the distant part of the continent are sending nets to assist their protection efforts has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he remarked.
