Major Online Outage Impacts Dozens Websites and Apps

A widespread web disruption has impacted dozens online platforms and applications around the world, and users experiencing troubles connecting to the web following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The disrupted services include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-owned platforms such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of issues using the the tax authority online portal on that morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers turned to social media to state their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, notifications of disruptions on specific apps ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the problem started in the Atlantic coast of the US at AWS, a section that supplies vital online framework for many firms, who utilize resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest cloud computing platform.

Just after late night (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and delays” for AWS services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The ripple effect seemed to hit platforms worldwide, with the problem monitoring service showing issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, also reported a rise in problems on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the state of Virginia, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the issues originated.
